Research Consultant
I have been commissioned to work on two Research Projects investigating wellbeing, relationships, sexuality and the sex education needs of people with learning disabilities in Poole and in Somerset. These projects have beeen commissioned by NHS PCT Trusts and two film companies.
For each research project, parents, carers and professionals were interviewed along with a greater number of people with learning disability. The information from this research was used to produce a 22,000 word report with a series of crucial recommendations that need to be implemented to allow people with learning disability to explore their sensuality and sexuality in a safe and rewarding way.
The reports are being used to guide the making of two films on sex and relationships for people with a learning disability. The Poole film is released in Oct 2010 and the Somerset film in Dec 2010.
An offshoot of this research is the invention and production of a board game that can be used to facilitate discussion on sex and relationships. I initiated and acted as consultant on this project and the work was carried out by third year student nurses, occupational therapists and physiotherapists. Before in goes into production, the game will be trialed for one year by nurses in special schools, the sexual health team, and other professionals involved in the care of people with learning disability.
